Some Favourite Routes

routes listed from South to North !
False Bay Peaks, paths and caves - Muizenberg Park - from the grass on the corner diagonally opposite the Shoprite parking lot at the main Muizenberg traffic lights - along beach, rocks and walkway to Kalk Bay .. up Echo Valley (or easier angled mule track to keep running) to big boulders halfway up Echo. Take small lefthand path through eye in rocks over to Clovelly side. Scramble up to Boomslang cave. Go through Boomslang cave (100m pitch black + short crawl - torches necessary) right thru mountain to upper Echo Valley again. Run / walk through yellowwood forest to Amphitheatre (Lovely nooks and scrambles like Tranquility cracks) Over the top and run along narrow but flat and sandy ridge path. Down briefly into Spes Bona and up onto next flat, sandy ridge path (spectacular views) run gently (but spectacularly) down to jeep tracks pick up path to Muizenberg cave go through Muizenberg cave (optional but a 'fun' diversion) Run along beautiful, thin sandy flat ridge path which ultimately zigzags down to top of Pecks Valley. can go down there or do another small but really nice loop over Muizenberg peak and back to same point. TORCHES ESSENTIAL!!!

Silvermine (Muizenberg side) - From the parking area where the pine trees used to be, on the Muizenberg side of Silvermine, just after the top of Ou Kaapse Weg - up gravel road past the waterfall; take left hand fork. After about 250m or so, take sandy path to the left, which runs up the valley parallel to the road. (There are actually two of these paths, so it doesn't matter if you miss the first). Straight across an intersection, then keep right at the next fork. The path meets the gravel road very close to Junction Pool. Straight across and up the steep hill with the broken concrete tracks. About 50m after Nellie's Pool at the top, take sandy path to the left up towards Muizenberg cave. Skirt the cave amphitheatre to the left, then take the path to the right. Take left-hand fork soon afterwards and keep heading up in a north-easterly direction. There are two more intersections of sorts; keep right at both. Near the crest of the ridge you will be able to see Sandvlei in front of you and then soon afterwards a beacon down to the right above Muizenberg. Follow the path down to the beacon (it becomes indistinct over the last 30m or so.) The view from the beacon is awesome. Head back up along the same path, but this time don't turn off at all -keep straight on. After crossing a wetland area , the path crosses the gravel road, with the naval radio station off to the right. Cross the road, and straight on for about 50m, then turn left along a sandy, stony track. After a couple of hundred metres, and before you reach the gravel road again, turn right (immediately after a small stream) and you will be back on the original path you came up on. Follow path down to the road and then the road back to the car park.

At the neck take a left through the amphitheatre a right at the top of the ridge and follow the trail until you reach a route marker to the left - down through the Amazon forest to the jeep track. Now a two kay slog up to the crossing will to the trail leading to Junction pool - make a left at the pool - follow the track down to the start.

Devil's Peak - Quarry and cannons - Vredehoek - The run starts off going left (Eastwards) and down (yes down! - but only briefly), along the dirt road below the quarry (looking bare now all the trees have gone). It continues on and ever-upwards, and upwards, gradually, doing a sweeping circuit of Devil's Peak to finally meet up with the dirt road just below King's blockhouse. From the blockhouse - take the contour path around in a westerly direction, passing below Woodstock cave, through the cork-oak grove, and finally, after some major sludge (where Hayden once got some brand new shoes truly christened-a-la-crag) take a sharp turn right, down to Tafelberg road. Cross over the road and find the path down past the canons to a dirt road that zigzags back down to the quarry.
From town:- drive up Buitenkant St (the road going uphill alongside the Gardens Centre) left into Ludlow, veer left into Exner, right into Derry, left into Chelmsford.

From S suburbs, - simplest way = from de Waal Dr, below High Cape .. pass Barnham Rd on left, and take the next turn left into Crassula (unlabelled) just after you go under a pedestrian bridge. Drive up Crassula, bearing right & upwards until you find Derry road going steeply up. (Derry has restaurants and shops in it) Left up into Derry, left into Chelmsford.
